Check valves are important valves in pipeline system. However, the closure of them may provoke serious turbulence. It is very important and essential for pipeline systems to correctly predict and calculate the surge pressure due to the closure of check valves. Firstly, the solution of differential equations governing movement of the clack of swing check valve is derived, and the surge pressure is computed by characteristics method. Secondly, for the purpose of simplification, a simple and applicable method for calculating the closure pressure is put forward by making use of the dynamic characteristic of check valve. All these could be of referenced value to engineering design and selection of check valves.
