Two related analyses are presented to account for the presence of traveling-wave vibration in stationary and rotating cylindrical shells in gas-turbine engines. Governing equations are developed and shown to correlate well with experimentally determined evidence. For stator casings enclosing rotating blades, a criterion for minimum wall thickness is developed. For rotor shells, relations for forward and backward-traveling waves are compared with the corresponding well-known relations for disks.
